Mirror Mirror
By Maria Romero
The shadow of my likeness,
enigmatic and obscure,
reaches out her hand, longing,
beckoning me through the portal.
I know that once I cross this threshold,
nothing will ever be the same —
if I confront the ugly truths,
the dark desires I’ve kept tamed.
Stepping beyond the doorway,
I feel the burning in her eyes —
a fire that’s raged forever,
the same embers I keep stied.
I envy her —
the way her hungry body ebbs and ows,
an animal,
with no regard, no shame,
as she devours.
My disembodied double,
my enemy, my friend,
my lifelong companion —
my simulacrum.
